A Couple of years ago,
BC Pickleball in conjunction with parks and Rec White Rock attempted to start a program of Pickleball in the curling rink during the summer. It proved a big task for several reasons – some structural, some promotional, some managerial ( several sports at the same time ) and some just a lack of players. They did however provide instructors and those who played there enjoyed it especially when the courts were run length-wise as opposed to width – wise.
On Thursday, June 25th , as indicated, the new outdoor courts ( 4 in number ) were opened up for our use and the adjacent lock box unlocked with keys from the parks and Rec office next to the skating rink at Centennial park. Four portable sets are on the way , but I used two of BC Pickleball’s sets, available to any member to sign out and use for family gatherings, play areas that do not have nets etc. With the practice board, these courts have lots of room to play on, and , with a donated ball hopper to service the four courts should they need fresh balls, we have a workable system.. The green or white jugs balls can be used when there is no pronounced wind and the harder Dura balls, Ornge, yellow, white or Blue for when It there is more wind than normal. With donated balls and paddles as well as numerical court markings for tournaments ( laminated ) and the one page set of rules – also laminated and the times posted for teaching and play as well as the length that players can hold a court during non – teaching , open times, we have a system that pleases all and allows the tennis fraternity to use their court when we do not.
The key to the lock box which contains the portable sets ( Harrow ) with instructions is held at the parks and Rec office next to the skating rink at Centennial park . You may sign it out !
There are plans to do a promotional kickoff of these courts with the Mayor, Alder-persons and the public .
Finally , the vision sees a banner, sign , or poster on the fence above the practice board facing 16th Ave to announce that Pickleball has arrived in White Rock. ( Like Taylor box for lacrosse.)
The signage at these four courts will read :
Monday and Thursday lessons from 9-10am then play from 10:00 am to noon. Other times of the week are open and both sports (Tennis and Pickleball) can use the courts on a first come, first serve basis for an hour.
We thank Eric Stepura – Parks and Rec director and John Stech operations manager for their diligence with this project which has taken several months to put into place. It is hoped these lovely courts will be full all summer and many will take advantage of the donated time by instructors .
